3 In-Home Stretching Exercises to Keep You Limber

Your body needs to keep moving. It loves physical activity and that includes stretches. Modern humans tend to have more sedentary lives, working out our days behind a computer. This isn't great for the muscles, which need to move and stretch. At Chesapeake Wellness Center in Chesapeake, VA, we understand the importance of staying limber.

Stretching Your Lower Back

Many people experience lower back pain. It is a good idea to stretch the lower back a few times per day. To do this, grab a chair and stand with your feet hip-distance apart with your arms loosely hanging at your sides. Gently bend your knees and move your hips forward. Next, reach out your arms toward the chair for balance. When fully stretched, make sure your back is flat with one hand on the chair. Your arms and hips should form a straight line, as should your hips and ankles. To extend the stretch, lean slightly back.

Stretching Your Chest

Hunching over a computer, stove, or even while gardening can make your chest muscles tight and sore. You will want to get your mobility back by standing in a doorway with your legs spread apart and one leg in front of the other. Grab hold of the doorway with your palms and lean forward. You should feel the stretch in your chest.

Stretching Your Hips

Take care of your hips as you age by regularly stretching them. This is especially important for those who spend a long time sitting. To stretch your hips, straighten your right leg out behind you while sitting on a fitness ball and press your toes into the floor while raising your heel. Next, place your hands on your left knee and push your upper body back using your arms. You will feel the stretch across your right hip. Hold for 30 seconds and then switch sides.
