Tech Neck

How to Avoid Tech Neck

Do you look at your phone a lot? Do you find yourself hunched over a laptop during the day? Or maybe you play games on a device at night? We have so many different electronic devices in our lives now – cell phones, laptops, gaming devices, tablets – that a large majority of us spend our days with our heads pointed downward. While this type of technology is useful and fun, it can also be dangerous and cause tech neck. At Chesapeake Wellness Center in Chesapeake, VA, we can treat neck pain and help you avoid it.

What Is Tech Neck?

Tech neck is what happens when you strain your neck muscles from looking down too much, usually at an electronic device. Your neck elongates, your chin points downward, and your shoulders may even round when you hunch over a device. The weight of your head tilted at a 15-degree angle puts a large amount of pressure on your neck. It can cause pain and stiffness in your neck, shoulders, and back.

Avoiding Tech Neck

One of the easiest ways to avoid tech neck is to limit your screen time. However, sometimes that just is not possible. If you find your neck hurting while working on a laptop or desktop, think about your desk ergonomics. Is the screen positioned so that you are required to tilt your chin downwards to work? Make sure your screen is eye level, even if this requires a stand for the laptop or monitor. This will raise your chin and put less pressure on your neck. Also, pay attention to your posture when working.

Neck Pain Treatment

Our chiropractor will relieve existing neck pain. We use postural screenings to look for any issues that may be causing neck or back pain. We can suggest neck stretches and exercises to loosen the muscles and help your blood flow. All techniques used by our chiropractor are natural and pain-free.

We also offer massage therapy, which will loosen the muscles that may be suffering from spasms due to tech neck. Gentle manipulation of your neck, shoulder, and back muscles works hand-in-hand with adjustments, stretches, and exercises. Our chiropractor may use spinal adjustments to realign the neck and spine, preventing future pain.
